The secret behind Helmut Newton’s photographs
Helmut Newton… sometimes it’s hard to find words to discribe him and his secret of photography. First of all he was a genius. It’s not just that his photographs broke the rules in fashion photography but had a huge impact on the image of women as well. The German-born photographer traveled around the world to work for the biggest fashion designers and magazines like Vogue and Elle.
And what turns a shot into a typical Helmut Newton photo?
Strong women – sometimes naked. Women with attitude, passion, self-confidence, and with a beautiful face and perfect legs. These women didn’t just sit there and smiled towards the camera. Every picture/woman tells a powerful story. That’s why the locations and settings where very important, too.
A big city’s skyline or a luxurious hotel room
Newton’s women were high-class and always looked wealthy. They were equipped with cigarettes, a mannequin, crocodile, dangerous looking dog or a saddle on their backs. Powerful women, unusual story/posing, high-class locations, special props – the last thing a Newton photo needs is this classy high contrast black and white look, although there are a bunch of amazing colourful photos by Helmut Newton, too. And now just have a look yourself!
